Dear Reader,

In our tenth issue, we would like to inform you about the following topics:

-GRANteD Stakeholder Conference in autumn 2023
-New blog post
-10th Stakeholder Committee Meeting
-Publications
-Upcoming dissemination activities
GRANteD has investigated the existence and emergence of gender bias in the decision-making processes of research funding and scientific careers over the past few years. In doing so, we have learned a great deal about the various evaluation and decision-making processes in research funding and the impact of grants on scientific career trajectories, information that is highly applicable to other contexts of the research system like research assessment processes or inclusive research cultures. GRANteD explored these topics through a variety of case studies, looked at this from the perspective of different methods and data, and were able to generate diverse and intriguing results. Find more information and the preliminary agenda on our Website.

We would be delighted to welcome you to join our discussion of research results in Vienna. If you cannot travel to Vienna, you will have the opportunity to follow the event via live stream. Although this will not allow you to participate actively in the discussion, we are very interested to receive your feedback, questions, and comments, and we will provide you with means to engage in discussions and feedback rounds.

Please note that the participation in the event is free of charge, but that the attendance at the in-person event is limited to 80 persons.

WHEN? October 19th & 20th, 2023
WHERE? Impact Hub Vienna | Lindengasse 56 | 1070 Vienna | Austria
HOW? Register and reserve your seat at the conference

At this event, identifiable photographs, video, and/or audio recording may be taken und used for an unlimited period of time by JOANNEUM RESEARCH’s public relations department for all media channels (e.g. website, social media, press). The recordings could be provided to the media for reporting on this event, and they may publish recordings for an unlimited period of time. You may revoke this declaration in writing at any given time. This revocation applies only to future publications, not to those that have already taken place.
New blog post: Are there gender differences in the number of research proposals submitted?

Torger Möller from the DZHW investigates in his blog post if gender differences in grant success rates might be determined among other factors by differences in the application behaviour. The state of the research on grant application behaviour is that female academics submit fewer proposals than men. The blog post shows that it is methodologically challenging to draw this conclusion. The reason for that is that there is enough information about applicants but too little about the population behind them. To investigate the grant application activity of male and female researchers, a random sample of academics is used. The results show that when an appropriate benchmark is applied (in this case, controlling for academic status and research area), no significant gender differences in grant applications can be found.
The full blog post is available on the GRANteD Website.
10th Stakeholder Committee Meeting | August 24th 2023

On August 24th, 2023 the 10th stakeholder committee meeting of the GRANteD Project was taking place. Peter van den Besselaar from the GRANteD team presented findings from analyzing GRANteD data-sets and large-scale studies. Combining large-scale studies with the GRANteD data-sets helps to identify where in the grant allocation process gender bias might occur or where there might be a risk that gender bias occurs. The lively and enriching discussion with our stakeholder committee members circled around whether bibliometric analysis is the right benchmark for comparing research excellence of applicants and whether other indicators are needed in the light of new approaches to research and grant assessments like DORA or COARA.
