Join us in exchanging knowledge & experience - Register for our first Conference!
We invite research funders, gender experts, researchers, policy makers and all people interested in a fair research funding system to come together, exchange experiences and to have open discussions about challenges and limitations of decision making in grant allocation and peer review.
To allocate grants, the peer review system is widely used form, yet it has been criticised for various limitations, gender (un-) fairness being one of them.

In our conference we first want to talk about the various limitations and challenges of decision making in grant allocation (from host institution to peer review as such). Based on the first keynote by Ulrike Bischler from "Volkswagen Foundation" introducing a lottery approach, various alternative forms of grant allocation will be explored, putting emphasize on measures already in place.
|
In a second step the relevance of gender and potential factors for gender bias will be discussed in depth after the second Keynote from Ruth van Veelen concerning stereoptypes in acadmia. We will also exchange experience and talk about the impact of measures already implemented.
|
Discussing these issues with national and international stakeholders will help the GRANteD consortium to fine-tune the research approach while at the same time it is the conference's aim to stimulate the discourse and to subsequently start capacity building for a gender fair research funding.

In 1997 Wennerås and Wold published a paper in Nature on sexism & nepotism in peer review. Showing that female applicants had to do more to get the same grading as male applicants the study has been highly often cited and many follow up studies were conducted since then.

In our latest Blogpost GRANteD Consortium Members Ulf Sandström and Peter van den Besselaar write about the wide and sometimes probelmatic reception of Susanne Wennerås's and Agnes Wold's Study. They argue that many of the research that followed and explictitly reffered to the paper published in 1997 misinterpreted the original study.

The 25th International Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators will be held, in collaboration with the European Network of Indicator Developers (ENID). The conference is hosted by the Danish Centre for Studies on Research and Research Policy (CFA) at Aarhus University. This edition will have a special focus on the interplay between the construction and use of Science, Technology and Innovation indicators in science policy and performance evaluations, and the potential effects they have on research integrity. The conference will have a mix of traditional paper and poster sessions, as well as special track sessions where the presentation form can vary. Deadline for submissions of paper and poster: April 1.
